In trying to think of a way to make the title sequence I came across this video. It shows how, with very simple techniques, you can turn bokeh (the colourful shapes produced by an out-of-focus light source) into any shape you want. I have even seen people do it with lettering and thought this might be a cool way to make the title appear on screen. I thought that this technique would have worked conceptually as well as visually, because the appearance of bokeh is an artefact of aperture size in photography, and because the storyline of the film revolves around the appearance of an aperture which allows the character to see into the future.
As pointed out in this video, however, the designs have to be under two centimetres in diameter and I was therefore unable to make the entire title (Flattening of Affect) appear in one shot as I wanted.
This means that I ended up having to make a title which has a similar conceptual basis, but through a different technique.
I used a kind of cut-out technique on the text layer, leaving the text as an alpha channel, and then used my video footage of the moon to create different colour schemes until I found one which worked. This one was successful since the colour coming through the text is blue, the same colour as the light in the film.
